Emanuele Barbella (1703-1777) was born in Neaples and a well-known violinist in his home country Italy as well as abroad. As a composer Barbella must have been quite successful for his music was published in Paris and London during his life time. The mandolin duo “Alla Frencese Furiosamente”, performed here by Pauline Ulderink and Ruth Rouw – two mandolinist of the well-known Dutch Mandolin Chamber Orchestra Het CONSORT – comes from a music volume published around 1770 that contains 6 duets for two Mandolins. The original cover title heads “Six Duos pour deux Violons ou Mandolines / avec une Basse ad Libitum / Composés par Mr. Barbella Fils” (Six Duettos for 2 Violins or 2 Mandolines with an optional Bass). For mandolinists all Barbella duets are very much worth to be studied and performed. Today there are 2 re-issues of these duets by Barbella available: volume 1 duo, 1-3 & vol. 2, 4-6 published by SCHOTT (ED 7016-7017 modern music print-Two parts Mand. without the optional Bass part — reprint of this music preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris (France) and a facsimile of the original printing with (!) the optional Bass part published by Neil Gladd through OMI, New York (USA) found in the The Library of Congress in Washington, DC (USA). Prices on these pieces vary, except for a top brand good condition vintage mandolin you are going to be paying a bit more money. It’s not just the name you are paying for it is the style and history. Vintage pieces might have a different sound than newer instruments, that unique sound can make all the difference.

You can look for dealers strictly dealing in vintage pieces to get the most acceptable price or you can check out auction sites as they appear to have just about anything you could be looking for. Dealing without delay with dealers in this case can get you a better product. That having been said, if you opt to get a vintage mandolin do the research on the median going rate for a respectable conditioned mandolin. Like so many other stuff, the final price will rely on condition and name brand, different brands resale differently. Look around and do not compromise on the first one you see.

Remember mandolins are wooden instruments, exposure to moisture might make them swell and crack. Vintage pieces have to have a radical inspection done on them if you are planning on playing them. The sound quality manifestly is not important on instruments being purchased for that reason.

Owning and using a vintage mandolin can give you much pleasure and pride, but these mandolins should either be acquired by collectors or mandolin professionals. People learning how to play the mandolin should get a softly used or new mandolin to play and practice on.
